ANSWER: Aug 13 2010 Dear Brad, put simply, where you take paint flake waste depends on where it came from, although it can, I believe be recycled for its lead content if it contains more than 1.5% lead, at Australian Refined Alloys (ph 02 9516 5099) no matter where it came from. Recycling is clearly the most sustainable option though you do have to pay. Otherwise, if from a residential or educational facility, it is permitted to be double bagged and placed in the regular council rubbish bin (no matter what the lead content is). If it is from a commercial or industrial facility, it must either be tested by the TCLP test and if the lead is elevated, it must be disposed of at a hazardous waste tip, whereas, if the lead is not elevated, then again it can go to the regular council rubbish bin, OR if not tested then it MUST be disposed of at a hazardous waste tip, such as the one at Lucas Heights. Please see the info at http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/waste/ or phone the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW) on 02 9995 5000 if you have any inquiries. Yours Sincerely Elizabeth O'Brien |
