QUESTION: Does oral chelation work & where can you purchase the drug in Australia? 17/08/09 New South Wales, Australia

I was wanting to find out about oral chelation and if it works and were can it be purchased here in Australia

Regards Manuel

ANSWER: Aug 17 2009

Dear Manuel,

I wish I could say that there's been a study showing risks of lead-induced health problems such as heart attack, stroke, osteoporosis and Alzheimer's all being reduced in a chelated study group compared to a matched non-chelated control group. But to my knowledge, no such study exists so all we have is case reports by chelating doctors and anecdotal reports of chelated patients saying how wonderful it is and how it's given them a new lease of life and reversed their lead poisoning symptoms (made them less aggressive, improved their memory), reduced their blood pressure etc. So if you don't mind being a guinea pig yourself, then I recommend that you find a chelating doctor who has a lot of experience, and the doctor will obtain the drug and advise you on the supplements and water-intake necessary to get the maximum benefit from the treatment and suffer the least side-effects.

If you are considering chelation because you have been exposed to lead, then you should definitely also ask the doctor to test your blood for lead and for your iron status as well, before you start, and periodically during the course of treatments. If your blood lead level is above 2 micrograms per decilitre (µg/dL) you will want to investigate any potential sources of lead at home or work and remove them or remove yourself from them. It is crazy to start chelation if you are still taking lead in from your environment every day.

I will send you our Info Pack 56 on the dangers of a blood lead level above 2 µg/dL, and Info Pack 23 on nutrition to fight lead poisoning, and you should be able to locate a chelating doctor through our Info Pack 45.

All the best

Yours Sincerely

Elizabeth O'Brien
