QUESTION: Lead-trained Queensland painters & risks of lead poisoning in old houses. 04 Jan 2004, Queensland Australia

We own an old Queenslander and it needs to be taken back to bare boards because of old chipped paint. It contains lead because we have tested it. We would like to paint it ourselves but we need reliable, safe people to remove the paint for us as we have three small children and a vegetable garden which we do not want to contaminate. We need qualified people to do this job can you supply us with contractors we live in Brisbane Queensland.

Any information would be appreciated.
Regards
Gail Wakeling

ANSWER: 23 Jul 2004

Dear Gail,

Master Painters Queensland offers lead paint training and licensing and some 250 of their Queensland members have done the course so all you need do is phone 1300660056 and ask for the lead-licensed paint contractors in your area. You can also read up on the appropriate methods so you have an understanding of why the quotes will be higher than from untrained contractors, at The Six Step Guide To Painting Your Home

It would be excellent if you could have the children blood lead tested at the GPs before the work begins because unfortunately they are already at risk before renovation begins and it's important to know what their blood lead levels are when they are young. A blood lead level over 15 micrograms per decilitre is a notifiable disease in Queensland which means you will be given assistance by the Health Department if any of the children has an elevated blood lead level either before or after the paint removal process. I'd be happy to discuss the blood lead results with you if you ask your doctor to provide you with both the number and the unit of the results.

Yours Sincerely
Elizabeth O'Brien
