QUESTION: What to do after getting blood lead testing done. 23 Feb 2004, Oregon USA

my home we're renting was built in 1930's-1940's I think. I know we have asbestos siding and bad water, but I don't know why every one living in my house ranging in age from 2-23yrs has signs of lead poisoning there are 5 of us, we've lived here for 3 yrs. how can I find out more info. I'm really worried its like we all have cancer or something cause we're always sick and weak and have bowel problems and such. please send info. thanks

ANSWER: 23 Feb 2004

Dear Brenda

The best way to determine whether you and your family have been exposed to lead is to have a blood lead test which your doctor can order. If the result is low then you know your exposure is not recent so you need not waste time and money searching for lead sources in the places you currently frequent/live/work. Even if your blood lead level is currently elevated, the actual lead may have entered your body many years ago and may be being recirculated now out of the bone stores.
