QUESTION: Lead Assessment in furniture, paint etc. 03 Mar 2006, New South Wales Australia

Dear sir/madam,
Most of our wooden furniture are tailor made overseas, we are not sure how much lead is in the paint. we have a newborn baby and are concerned about lead contamination in the house. Would you kindly suggest how to conduct a lead assessment?

ANSWER: 06 Mar 2006

Dear Faye
The first thing I would suggest to you is, you need to buy a Lead Spot Test Kit. The address and details from where you can get one of these is at our website: www.lead.org.au/clp/leadtestall.html The Kit explains how to conduct the test yourself and if the results are positive or negative.
Also The LEAD Group Inc. has kits for sale at Do–It–Yourself Lead Safe Test Kits
In your email you mentioned about furniture that might be lead painted, but i may suggest you that if your house is pre 1970's, it may be brought to notice that the house paint may contain dangerous levels of lead, much more than the furniture paint, which may harm the newborn.
If you please, you can send us more detailed email, as to what are your considerations in the house for Lead Assessment.
I am also sending some information regarding "Painting Your House", which i thought might be helpful to you. You can find it directly on this website: www.environment.gov.au/atmosphere/airquality/publications/pubs/leadpaint.pdf It provides excellent information regarding the paint in the house, how to find out the lead in paint and dispose it. And how it effects young children.
Hope all this information helps to answer your question.
We would be interested to learn the test results and if there is any further query, you are most welcome.
