QUESTION: Contacts for help with gasoline sniffing addiction, 18 May 2005, Florida USA

Yes my name is Amanda and I have a brother that is 28 yrs of age and has a problem sniffing gasoline....He use to sniff it when we were kids....He had to be rushed to the hospital and almost died....I recently found out that he is addicted on sniffing again...And he knows he has a problem and would love to stop it but he cant stop on his own and he has a child that is 2 yrs of age and he is very worried that if he doesn't stop that it is going to kill him and he doesn't have insurance so it is going to be hard to get him into a rehab center...I need some advice and help on what to do...My brother means the world to me and I don't want to lose him...He use to drink a lot of beer and just recently stopped and I think he has replaced the beer with gasoline. Please help maybe you can get a hold of someone to help us.
ANSWER: 18 May 2005

Dear Amanda,

Thank you for your email. We are sorry to hear about your brother. It is great that you want to do something about his addiction. Unfortunately, we are a lead poisoning advice organisation, who help those with lead contamination problems. We can only advise you if you feel that he has been poisoned by the lead in the gasoline. This has to be diagnosed by the doctor first. However, in your case, you are concerned about him stopping this habit. The best organisation to help you with this is the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition. Their website is www.inhalants.org We recommend you contact them immediately and let them know of the problem. Their helpline number is 800-269-4237 or 512-480-8953 and their Email

We hope this helps. Good Luck.
