QUESTION: Australian manufacturers of lead-free fishing weights, 14 Apr 2005, New South Wales Australia

I am after manufacturers of lead free weights like the weights used for fishing weights?

ANSWER: 14 May 2005

Update 2010:

  • Aquarium Monsters manufacture and import a range of 100% Lead Free Fishing Sinkers and Tackle

Hi,

ridiculous as it may seem, we know of no Australian manufacturers of lead-free fishing weights, though we've seen several companies go under trying to market them. So you're only left with asking your local store to obtain supplies overseas or obtaining them yourself directly (unless you're thinking of setting up a manufacturing company). If you organise an Australian supplier, please let us know!! In the meantime, see: Canadian Wildlife Service Environment Canada [http://www.ec.gc.ca/Publications/07301491-3846-467B-A38F-18FA9722A07E/LeadFishing

] Where to find lead-free alternatives - Manufacturers of lead-free fishing tackle contains a list of suppliers of lead free tackle in Canada, USA, UK & Sweden [& more recently China]. There are a wide variety of non-toxic alternatives to lead fishing sinkers and jigs, including bismuth, clay, steel, tin, glass, tungsten beads and putty. Ask your local fishing supply retailer to stock these lead-free alternatives.

Yours Sincerely
Elizabeth O'Brien
