QUESTION: Contractors and a specification for bridge paint removal. 18 Feb 2004, Queensland Australia

Please provide me a list of contractors and a specification to use to remove lead paint from a bridge

regards
Srinath Fernando

ANSWER: 18 Feb 2004

Dear Srinath,

Bridge paint removal work should be done in compliance with AS 4361.1 Guide To Lead Paint Management Part 1: Industrial Applications, by a contractor accredited with Class 5 of the PCCP (Painting Contractors Certification Program). PCCP certifies industrial / commercial paint removal classes 1- 5. Class 5 is Hazardous Paints including leaded paints. Only companies (painting contracting firms) can be accredited, and PCCP keeps a register of companies so accredited. It is however a requirement for Class 5 accreditation (hazardous paint removal) that the firm employs at least one person who has completed an endorsed course in Lead Paint Management, and that a person who has completed this course (and who has other appropriate skills and experience) is appointed as responsible person for each project involving removal of hazardous paint. The APAS web-published list of Class 5 accredited contractors (see www.apas.gov.au/pccp/index.htm) is not always up to date so you can call PCCP on (03) 9248 4902 in case there are additional companies now accredited.

Yours Sincerely
Elizabeth O'Brien
