Ballad of Calvary Street by James K Baxter On Calvary Street are trellises Each Saturday when full of smiles The meal-brown scones display her knack, A giant parsnip sparks his eye, When both were young she would have laughed, Nearer the bone, sin is sin, The afternoon goes by, goes by, Flood-waters hurl upon the dyke And so these two old fools are left, Why hammer nails? Why give no change? "Ballad of Calvary Street" was first published in "Collected Poems of James K Baxter", edited by JE Weir, published by Oxford University Press (1980). Reprinted with permission from Mrs Baxter. James Baxter was a New Zealand poet who died in 1972 |
